Professor Speros Vryonis, Jr. Appointed AHIF Senior Fellow for Hellenism and for Greek and Turkish StudiesWashington, DC—The American Hellenic Institute Foundation (AHIF) is pleased to announce that Professor Speros Vryonis, Jr. has accepted the appointment as AHIF Senior Fellow for Hellenism and for Greek and Turkish Studies. Professor Vryonis is professor emeritus of history at the University of California; former Alexander S. Onassis Professor of Hellenic Culture and Civilization and Director of the Alexander S. Onassis Center for Hellenic Studies; former Director of the Speros Basil Vryonis Center for the Study of Hellenism; among other academic activities. He received his B.A. from Southwestern College, Memphis, Tennessee in 1950 majoring in ancient history and the classics, his M.A. from Harvard in 1952 and his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1956. Professor Vryonis is the author of many books and numerous articles in scholarly journals. His most recent book is the monumental The Mechanism of Catastrophe—The Turkish Pogrom of September 6-7, 1955 and the Destruction of the Greek Community of Istanbul. Professor Vryonis has received numerous awards, elections and appointments.
