AHIF Announces Fall 2002 Conference:
The Future Of Hellenism In The U.S.

The American Hellenic Institute Foundation (AHIF) today announced its first annual conference on The Future of Hellenism in the U.S., to take place October 18-19, 2002 at the Capital Hilton in Washington, DC. The keynote speaker for the event will be Professor Charles Moskos, renowned military sociologist and author of Greek Americans: Struggle and Success, and New Directions in Greek American Studies(with Dan Georgakas).

Dr. Moskos is currently professor of sociology at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and a visiting fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. The conference also promises a line-up of other renowned experts who will offer their perspectives and analyses of numerous themes tied to the Greek American community.

The conference will focus on the following, among other, matters:

• modern Greek studies programs;
• Greek American organizations and their future;
• the role of Greek American media in the community;
• the role of Greece and Cyprus in the future of Hellenism in the U.S.;
• the role of the church;
• Greek language at the university level; and
• K-12 grade Greek American schools

Following the initial waves of immigration from Greece during the late nineteenth and early and mid-twentieth centuries, the Greek American community has now established itself in American society and is forming a uniquely Greek American identity. "By sponsoring this conference on The Future of Hellenism in the U.S., the AHIF aims to provide an opportunity for critical evaluation of and reflection on Hellenism and its application and meaning to the Greek American and American community today," said AHI Executive Director Nick Larigakis.
